Nouns(名词)

Common Nouns (常用名词)
Common nouns are general names that refer to people, animals, objects, buildings, places, etc.

Example:
baby(婴儿)
lion(狮子)
pen(钢笔)
school(学校)
zoo(动物园)

Proper Nouns (专有名词)
Proper nouns are the names of a particular person, country, town, city, street, month and day, etc.

The first letter of a capital letter.

Example:
Mr Lee
Siti Nurhaliza
Dr Johari
Malaysia
Singapore
January
Friday


Abstract Nouns (抽象名词)
Abstract nouns are things that we cannot see or touch but can feel and think about.

Name of special qualities, emotion, action or condition.

It is used to refer to felling, concepts, ideas, states of mind.

Example:
love (爱)
joy(喜悦)
music(音乐)
happiness(幸福)

Collective Nouns (具体名词)
Used when we refer to a number of people, animals, or objects that belong to same group.

Example:
band(乐队)
class(类)
flock(群)
comb
school

Countable & Uncountable

Nouns can be divided into two:
  • Countable nouns
  • Uncountable nouns
Countable nouns- used things that can be counted. They can be used in the singular or plural forms.

Uncountable nouns- used for things that cannot be counted. They do not have a plural form.

Gender

This noun tells whether a person or an animal is a male or female.

There are four types of gender.

  • Masculine- Used for all males.
  • Feminine- Used for all females.
  • Common- Used for both male and females.
  • Neuter- used for things which have no life or sex.

Singulars & Plurals

Nouns have two numbers:

The singular number(one person, animal thing or place)

The plural number(more then one person, animal, thing or place)

Plural nouns are divided into three types:
  • regular plural
  • irregular plural
  • foreign plural
